July Fourth on Amelia Island

The Omni Amelia Island Plantation is declaring a state of fun for the upcoming July Fourth holiday weekend! Sure, we're the place to be year-round, but when Independence Day rolls through, we tend to kick it up a notch. Maybe that's why Travel + Leisure decided to list us as one of America's Best Towns for July 4th. And if you've ever spent an Independence Day at Amelia Island, then you know why we made the cut. For a full rundown on all of the activities we'll be hosting at the resort over Independence Day Weekend, click here. Or just keep reading...

Amelia Island Photo Contest

Amelia Island is blowing up. Our tiny paradise, just 13 miles long and 4 miles wide, has been garnering quite a bit of (well-deserved) attention from the press lately. For instance, we just played host to the last season of the Golf Channel's Big Break Florida, we were recently featured as one of Travel + Leisure's Favorite American Beach Towns, we took the #5 spot on USA Today's list of 10Best U.S. islands, and we were even mentioned as one of the eleven Florida towns you need to visit by BuzzFeed. It's safe to say that the rest of the world is falling for our Isle of Eight Flags. And what's not to love? With the beauty of the Intracoastal Waterway to one side of us and the shimmering expanse of the Atlantic on the other, it's plain to see what's so enchanting about our little island oasis. From dawn to dusk, Amelia Island always seems as though she's ready for a photo op. In fact, it's probably safe to assume that most of us, locals and tourists alike, have stood outside the Salty Pelican at some point or another snapping pictures of the sunset with our iPhones (see below).     And enough of you have taken up amateur photography since moving here to form a Facebook group. And why not? The island is ripe with imagery and the opportunities to capture a picture perfect moment are limitless. That's exactly why the Amelia Island Tourist Development Council has decided to host a photo contest. The contest, open to both locals and tourists, features both Amateur and Professional categories along with various photo themes. Each photographer is allowed to submit up to twenty images of their choosing with prizes being awarded to each category and theme and one overall grand winner in each category. Winners will receive over $4,500 in prizes, including cash awards, hotel and bed & breakfast stays, a digital camera, and a $1,000 Amazon gift card. Final winners will be announced in early August and selected winning images will also appear in the fall issue of Atlanta Magazine. Visit here for the full skinny on the Amelia Island Photo Contest. Then dust off that camera lens, get out there and start shooting. But make haste! The contest ends on July 31.

The Animals at Omni Amelia Island Plantation

It's no secret that the staff at Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort's Nature Center loves their wildlife. A few of our resident critters have even been around since the Plantation first opened way back in 1972! We recently wrangled up the Nature Center's collection for a photo op and while some were a little more cooperative than others, we were able to nab some pretty great shots. While the Nature Center features creatures of all sorts, check out some photos of our friends who weren't shy about coming out of their shells at all. Who knew that so many different types of turtles existed? If these pictures happen to pique your curiosity, be sure to stop by the Nature Center for a tour! Each week they hold a number of "Featured Creature" hours where they'll spotlight one of the animals and you'll get to get up close and personal with them. Check out the schedule on our Weekly Resort Guide.
