Some people work for a living. Some people live  to work.  It's a wonderful thing to see people who are passionate about what they do. They don't just work, they work.  They get excited about what they do and how they do it and that passion spreads like wild fire. Last weekend I was proud to see our food and beverage team share their passion for culinary arts with a group of journalists we were hosting. Executive chef Daven Wardynski and Verandah chef Chris Pickren are two men who love what they do and it's contagious. And delicious.

Omni Introduces Umami Sauce For The Fifth Taste

Original blog posted on the Omni Hotels & Resorts blog. Long recognized for its excellence in food and beverage, Omni Hotels & Resorts has created its own Umami Sauce that will adorn the tables in select luxury hotels starting this week. This characteristic specialty sauce defines umami, the fifth taste after sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Created by a team of Omni chefs from Chicago, Denver, Orlando and San Antonio, Omni Hotels’ new Umami Sauce was developed in tandem with Peter Mollett of Red Kitchen Foods. In keeping with the popularization of unique and interesting condiments, this new sauce captures the deliciousness that defines umami, a loose translation from the Japanese umai (delicious) and mi (taste). A team of Omni chefs worked tirelessly for six months to create a sauce that perfectly combined the essential ingredients to achieve the umami factor. This secret sauce was then bottled, wrapped with an eye-popping label and is finally ready for its close up. Perfect for everything from scrambled eggs in the morning to a late-night burger, Omni’s new Umami Sauce is so good that hotel guests can purchase it for $9.95 a bottle in restaurants. “We worked really hard to get our Umami Sauce just right.” said John Brand, Omni Hotels Area Executive Chef. “This was a real labor of love and cooperative effort between some of our best chefs across America and the genius of Peter Mollett of Red Kitchen Foods.”

Horray Horray for Dinner at Gourmet Gourmet

I've worked at Amelia Island Plantation for nearly eight years and  I've been enjoying lunch at Gourmet Gourmet for just as long.  But it was not until recently that I dined in the evening for their refreshed dinner service, and it was fabulous! Gourmet Gourmet has been a staple Amelia Island restaurant for many years, but new owners Bill & Yamilka Mertens who purchased the business in August, have enhanced the restaurant in many ways, including a renewed focus on dinner.

Surfs Up at the New Natural Slice

Last week we opened our newest dining venue at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation, Natural Slice!  One of the newest Amelia Island restaurants, Natural Slice is a surf inspired pizza joint located on the south end of our coastal island.  The restaurant serves pizza by the slice (shortboards) or a full pie (longboards), all made on our signature saltwater crust harvested with salt straight from the local waters of the Atlantic Ocean! The shop offers an eclectic mix of clothing, accessories and surf gear for all ages. Enjoy a Sandbar shortboard (slice of cheese) or a Point Break shortboard (slice of peperoni)  for just $3. Try a Sandbar longboard (full cheese pizza) for the family for only $9 or create your own amped up Sandbar (cheese with your choice of toppings). The Endless Summer comes with olives, mushrooms, red onion, tomato and bell peppers while the Riptide is tomato, pepperoni, ham, bacon and sausage.  We also feature some epic fresh greens like the  Romaine salad with cucumber, tomato, red onion and slice sauce or the spinach salad with orange, palm, radish and ginger.

Who doesn't love a family meal gathered around the dinner table on a Sunday evening?  Usually the person doing the cooking and cleaning, right?  The Verandah at Omni Amelia Island Plantation has the perfect deal to allow you to spend your time enjoying your friends and family on Sunday evenings, leaving the work to us!
