2016 Doubles Boot Camps

Cliff Drysdale Tennis at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort is in the midst of its third straight year of the popular Doubles Boot Camps. Since the majority of people in the tennis community are doubles players, this camp is designed for those tennis enthusiasts who want to work on specific strategies that will take their doubles play to the next level. In year's past, players have come from all over Florida and the southeast to attend our Doubles Boot Camps and have left the sessions with a greater understanding and appreciation of the game. Not to mention, it's a great way to kick start the spring season for league play.

Gain Access to Omni Amelia Island Plantation’s Amenities With an Annual Resort Pass

Ever wondered what it might be like to play in Omni Amelia Island Plantation's backyard? What if you could tee off from two championship golf courses, perfect your tennis game on 23 pristine clay courts, or dine at nine exclusive resort restaurants. Many of the activities offered at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation are reserved for resort guests, or guests of the Villas of Amelia Island Plantation and members of the Amelia Island Equity Club, but local residents can now enjoy some of the amenities as well. The 1,300 acre oceanfront resort is now offering Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia residents* the opportunity to enjoy some of their private amenities for a nominal annual resort pass fee starting at $200 per year.

Doubles Boot Camp 2015

We Want You...For Doubles Boot Camp!   Believe it or not, the idea for Doubles Boot Camp sort of came on a whim.  Senior Director, Scott Colebourne and I were just sitting around one day discussing tennis and coaching strategies. We spent some time going over the evolution of Roger Federer's hair and we talked about how technique takes a very long time to master. What most players need to win is better strategy and tactics. We both agreed that changing your tactical approach or game plan is much easier to accomplish than say, developing a better forehand or a stronger serve. Since most adult players frequently play doubles, we felt that a camp specifically catered to doubles tactics and strategy would be just what our tennis program needed. With many camps (ours included) people come to learn better techniques and improve their weaknesses, but we wanted to change it up a bit and offer a camp that taught players ways to win using their existing game. Ultimately, the goal of the camp would be to get players to ask “when” to hit that forehand instead of “how” to hit it, which in our minds is much more important.

Coaching “Animal Strong” Junior Tennis at Omni Amelia Island Plantation

My perception of what a great tennis coach is has changed drastically over my 12 years of coaching.  At first,  I thought it was the coach who gave the greatest technical advice and who also played the best.  This eventually shifted to the assumption that if you were coaching an unbelievable tennis prodigy, that must mean you were also a great coach.  Recently, however, my thoughts on this have shifted again.  Sure, you need to be technically proficient and of course you have to want the person you are coaching to get better, but there is also something more. After all, every coach has given the same set of instructions at some point in time. Players need to be told  to bend their knees, or to hit higher over the net, or to get their ball toss higher.  But with this in mind, what separates a good coach from a great one?
