Big Break Florida Coming to Amelia Island

Big Break Florida is Coming...   We love our reality television don’t we? Season after season, shows like “Survivor,” “The Apprentice” and “Real Housewives” have attracted huge audiences. It’s a tried and true format. Show "real" people overcoming "real" challenges and you’ve got yourself a #1 show. Enter the Golf Channel's “Big Break” series. Premiering in 2003, the show placed contestants in a series of golfing challenges, with the weakest performer eliminated after each challenge. The last man standing received a cash prize along with exemptions into top professional golf tournaments. Big Break ended up a success, providing a huge boost to the Golf Channel’s ratings and its subscriber base. 11 years and 21 seasons later, Big Break is still going strong.

Golf Anchor Putting Rule Change

The hot topic right now in golf is the potential banning of anchoring a putter to make a stroke. Golf anchor putting means to attach it to your body, serving as a fulcrum in the stroke. In theory, this makes it easier to putt by making a natural pendulum.  The governing bodies of golf, the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, are proposing the rule that will outlaw the use of anchoring a putter, and will take comments on the subject for the next three months. So what does this mean for you and me? Well the first thing is that belly putters and long putters are not going away, they are not banning the putters, just how you use them. If in fact the rule does pass and I believe all signs are pointing that way,  it will not go into effect until the year 2016. The rule will read, ''In making a stroke, the player must not anchor the club, either "directly" or by use of an "anchor point.''  In conclusion, if the rule does take effect, you will have a few more years to either learn the conventional way of putting, or learn a new technique for using your long or belly putter.  If you're looking to improve your putting, here's four tips for putting with a conventional putter. And you should practice at any of the Omni Amelia Island Plantation's golf courses!  Four Putting Tips for Use of a Conventional Putter

Oak Marsh Golf Course
Renovations Complete

Did you know that the Oak Marsh Golf Course at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation reopened on October 19th after some great renovations to the Amelia Island golf course?  During the renovations this fall we re-surfaced all 18 greens with Tifdwarf Bermuda grass on the Florida golf resort course. We pruned over 90 trees to increase the sunlight and airflow around the greens, which will give us a sustainable growing environment for the new putting surfaces. A state of the art irrigation system was installed on the back nine of the Oak Marsh Golf Course (front 9 completed in 2006) that will provide 100% coverage of all turfgrass while using 20% less water. You may also notice that the driving range was lengthened by nearly 40 yards, pushing the first tee farther east and back approximately 20 yards, adding length to the renowned Florida golf course.  Golfers will experience much firmer and faster greens following the renovation which will certainly challenge every level of golfer.  The feedback from players on the Oak Marsh golf course has been great.  Scott Burgess, Director of Business Rental Sales with Enterprise Holdings said "the course is in the best shape and is offering all the challenges you would expect from a Pete Dye design.  You're better be able to move the ball around, it takes every shot in your bag to score well!" Another frequent Amelia Island Plantation golf player said that " the new greens on Oak Marsh are very firm and the rough is very thick making for a difficult challenge.  It was well worth the wait!" Looking for a tip to improve your golf swing before hitting the links for the newly renovated Oak Marsh golf course? Watch this unique tip from Dan Hackney, head golf professional at Omni Amelia Isalnd Plantation.    We're very excited that the course is in such great condition as we're going into our cooler golf weather.  Whether you're a member or a resort guest, or perhaps playing in a local charity tournament, we hope to see you all on the links soon!
