Big Break Florida is Coming…

We love our reality television don’t we? Season after season, shows like “Survivor,” “The Apprentice” and “Real Housewives” have attracted huge audiences. It’s a tried and true format. Show “real” people overcoming “real” challenges and you’ve got yourself a #1 show. Enter the Golf Channel’s “Big Break” series. Premiering in 2003, the show placed contestants in a series of golfing challenges, with the weakest performer eliminated after each challenge. The last man standing received a cash prize along with exemptions into top professional golf tournaments. Big Break ended up a success, providing a huge boost to the Golf Channel’s ratings and its subscriber base.

11 years and 21 seasons later, Big Break is still going strong.

That brings us to the next installment of the Big Break Florida series, which premieres February 24, at 9:00pm. This season hits pretty close to home, since the Golf Channel has chosen the 54-hole Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort as its stage. With seven breathtaking Oceanside holes and fairways that meander all along The Intracoastal Waterway, the location seems like a no brainer (sure, we’re a little partial,  but still…)

Recently named a “Top 121 Golf Resort in the World” by Condé Nast Traveler, all three of Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort’s courses are Audubon International Certified Sanctuaries. Essentially, that means we care about our habitat and are pretty careful when it comes to preserving it. Designed by top golf architects Pete Dye, Bobby Weed, and Tom Fazio, each 18-hole course offers challenging play and some of the best views in Florida.

big_break2I had the opportunity to shadow the Big Break Florida crew one afternoon as they shot footage for one of the challenges. It’s pretty incredible to witness the inner workings of the show. So much goes on behind the scenes – so many gears churning, so many people bustling, fulfilling their respective roles, guaranteeing that all goes off without a hitch. Perhaps that’s why Big Break has been around for so long. To quote the Golf Channel’s Senior Vice President of Programming, Tom Knapp, “Big Break is a cornerstone of our original series franchises, and it has proven to be a launching pad for many professional golfers hoping to break through to the LPGA Tour.”

And what’s not to love about the show? For starters, the upcoming season of Big Break Florida includes an all female cast. Now in the world of reality television, this tends to strike a chord with the viewing audience. Who knew that putting beautiful women in front of a camera could boost a show’s ratings? Anyway, this season finds twelve very competitive ladies facing off for more than $175,000 in cash and prizes, which happens to be the largest collective amount in series history.  Ultimately, the lucky winner of Big Break Florida will receive a jackpot of more than $100,000 in cash and prizes, including an exemption to the 2014 Manulife Financial LPGA Classic and  a four-day, three-night stay at any Omni golf resort in the United States.

We hope that you’ll join us for the next installment of Big Break Florida. We promise it’s going to be a nail biter. Don’t have the Golf Channel? Well don’t fret my friend, we’ll be hosting viewing parties every Monday night at 9:00pm at the Falcon’s Nest. Tune in with us and watch the ladies tee off from paradise while enjoying a variety of appropriately named drink specials (John Daly, anyone?).

And don’t forget about the “Big Break Getaway” at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation. This special package is meant for both lovers of the show and of the game and include luxurious oceanfront accommodations, unlimited golf play on both Ocean Links and Oak Marsh, a golf skill challenge as seen on Big Break Florida, free club rentals, and a complimentary signature cocktail.

Get ready, because Big Break Florida is right around the corner. We’ll be watching. Won’t you?
