Amelia Island tennis resortWith Labor Day weekend right around the corner, may people start to think about all things FALL – from cooler temperatures to everything pumpkin-flavored to the long-awaited return of football season.  But for tennis enthusiasts, something else is also on the horizon.  The Amelia Island Women’s Tennis Championship is returning to the Omni Amelia Island Plantation September 22-29th! Presented by Emanon Records, the women’s professional tennis event is coming back to Racquet Park for it’s fourth year.  The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Pro Circuit event  has quickly become a fixture on the local tennis calendar, providing great spectator opportunities for tennis enthusiasts.  The Amelia Island event features rising women competitors contending head-to-head on the tennis resort’s 23 Har-Tru courts over a week to crown a champion.

With approximately 90 tournaments hosted annually throughout the country and prize money ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, the USTA Pro Circuit is the pathway to the US Open, tour-level competition for aspiring tennis players, and a frequent battleground for established professionals. The USTA launched its Pro Circuit 33 years ago to provide players with the opportunity to gain professional ranking points, and since then, it has become the largest developmental tennis circuit in the world, offering nearly $3 million in prize money. Last year, more than 1,000 men and women from more than 70 countries competed in cities nationwide.

The 2012 Amelia Island Women’s Tennis Championship also provided a great stepping stone for success for many of our rising players. After winning this event in 2012, Jamie Loeb went on to complete in both the 2013 Junior Wimbledon and the French Open. 2012 runner-up Naomi Osaka was propelled into the women’s ranks and is currently #475 in the world.  Quite an effort for a fifteen-year-old.  While the line up for the 2013 event has not yet been confirmed, it will feature over 100 great tennis players looking to reach the next level in their game.

Play begins each morning at 10am at Racquet Park at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation tennis resort, with the singles finals to be held Sunday, September 29th at 11am, followed by the doubles final. Entry into the daily play is complimentary and entry into the finals will be a $10 donation to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  The week of professional tennis on Amelia Island will also include a complimentary Wilson’s Kids Day on September 22 from 3-5pm; a Pro-Am Tournament & Dinner on September 23 from 4-7:30pm for $75 per person; and a ROGY Tennis Tournament on September 28 from 9-11am for $20 entry fee.  For more information on any of the events or players for the Amelia Island Women’s Tennis Championship, contact the Amelia Island Cliff Drysdale Tennis team at the pro shop at 904-277-5145.
